Context / History

By becoming a “Grand Maritime Port” in 2013 under French legislation, the skills of developer and manager of natural spaces in its district are conferred on the Port of Guadeloupe.

In 2009, he began acquiring data on the environment in order to improve his knowledge of the natural spaces in his constituency. The initiation in 2016 of the Càyoli environmental program enabled the valorization and realization of the work undertaken by the Port for several years.

This partnership-oriented environmental program aims to develop and implement concrete solutions adapted to the restoration of coastal island ecosystems.

At the same time, he is firmly committed to thefight against climate change. In order to mitigate the effects, it carries out projects and undertakes work to adapt port infrastructure. In addition, it is committed to a process of decarbonizing its activities.

Project description

Today more than ever faced with the consequences of global warming, the territories of the Caribbean region are facing the same problems. Indeed, the narrowness of these territories, the crucial role of port logistics platforms and the fragility of ecosystems refer to the capacity to implement collective solutions.

In order to develop a pioneering strategy for adaptation to climate change, the Grand Port Maritime de la Guadeloupe and the Caribbean Shipping Association have joined forces to carry out the CariPorts project.

Subsidized by European funds as part of the Interreg Caribbean program, CariPorts’ ambition is to build a model of resilience for Caribbean ports by pooling the strengths, assets, means (technical and scientific) and know-how of each territory.

Goals

The challenges of the project are:
• Improve the response capacity of Caribbean ports to the growth of natural risks accentuated by global warming
• To provide Caribbean ports with tailor-made support for the integration of environmental issues into the development of their ports.

The final objective of CariPorts is to create an environmental label for Caribbean ports taking into account/considering their specificities and constraints.

A strategic position requires strategic responsibilities and strategic choices.

Caribbean ports have always occupied a strategic place. Essential crossing points for travelers and goods, vectors of employment and opening to the world, each Caribbean port has a unique history. Today, a new page in this story is being written, as they face unprecedented risks and events linked to climate change. As Caribbean seaports, it is our responsibility to undertake short and long term actions to build new horizons together. The CARIPORTS II project is a proactive and specific project for Caribbean ports facing climate change, CARIPORTS II aims to:
  • Strengthen the response capacity of Caribbean ports to the risks accentuated by climate change.
  • Technically define a strategy to promote the improvement of environmental skills in Caribbean ports
  • Deploy the first environmental label dedicated to Caribbean ports

As part of this new labeling, eight environmental performance indicators were co-constructed over 3 years with Caribbean ports:

The Pilot Ports Program

The pilot ports program is an exclusive and free program, reserved for a limited number of Caribbean ports, wishing to be a pioneer in experimenting with this new labeling.

The pilot port program includes participation in several workshops in order to improve skills on environmental issues related to obtaining the label.

Interport visits, discussions with recognized experts as well as personalized support are also included. This program is open to all ports located in the Greater Caribbean Region regardless of their size. Recruitment is currently being finalized. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

The School Program

Training organizations benefit from a special status within the framework of the CARIPORTS II project. The environmental themes covered within CARIPORTS II are available for all age groups.

This program is aimed at the entire young generation in the Greater Caribbean Region. Through awareness days, school exchange trips and games on environmental themes, young audiences are encouraged to inspire, analyze and work concretely around the implementation of actions in the Greater Caribbean Region.

If you are a teacher, representative of a school, a university or an association working for the training and awareness of new generations, in Guadeloupe and the Caribbean. Do not hesitate to contact us. We will be happy to collaborate with you.

The Partner Program

Are you a scientist, in the associative field, an institutional or non-governmental organization, concerned with the adaptation of Caribbean ports to climate change or by climate change in the broader sense? Join the CARIPORTS II Partner Program.

This program gives you access to content on the progress of the project, and the opportunity to integrate our reference directory of recommended actors to address themes linked to climate change in the Caribbean.
